2011 Toyota Prius is the No. 1 Fuel Sipper in the U.S.

By Toyota in the News on December 30, 2010
Toyota Prius image
A lot has changed in the 10 years since the Toyota Prius went on sale in the U.S., but here’s something that remains the same: For the 2011 model year, the Prius still leads the list of the “Top Ten EPA-Rated Fuel Sippers.”
The Prius first came to the U.S. for the 2001 model year and made an instant impact, thanks to its ability to achieve EPA ratings of 42 mpg city/41 mpg highway/41 mpg combined. But while those numbers are plenty impressive—and would top the EPA’s list even today—the 2011 model has upped the ante to an amazing 51 mpg city/48 mpg highway/50 mpg combined. That’s gives the Toyota an advantage of 10 mpg city/12 mpg highway/11 mpg combined over its next closest competitor in the EPA rankings.
Perhaps even more amazing is that while the Prius has steadily increased its fuel efficiency from generation to generation, it’s also gotten more powerful. The much-lauded previous edition of the Prius relied on 110 combined horsepower from Toyota’s innovative Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain, and the 2011 Prius now makes use of 134 hp.
Toyota achieves these kinds of results through its dedication to continuously improving the Prius with the latest advanced technology from around the world. This includes an available sliding-glass moonroof that is packaged with solar panels located over the rear seating area of the 2011 Prius. The panels power a new ventilation system that helps reduce the temperature inside the car when it’s parked in direct sunlight, also reducing the amount of time the air conditioning needs to be run for driver comfort.
And the rest of the Prius package is pretty darned efficient too. As just one example, consider that even though the car is smaller than a compact Honda Civic on the outside, it’s so big on the interior that the EPA rates the Prius as a mid-size vehicle, with room for five occupants.
All this for a base price that starts at just $22,800? It’s no wonder Toyota has sold more than 900,000 Prius models—and counting—in America since it first debuted.

Toyota, Lexus, & Scion Earn 8 Top Safety Pick Awards!

Dec. 22, 2010 - The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) today announced that eight Toyota, Lexus and Scion vehicles were among 66 winners of Top Safety Pick awards for 2011.

Responding to the announcement, Toyota said it “is pleased to have received eight IIHS Top Safety Picks for 2011, which we believe is reflective of our ongoing commitment to developing safe and reliable vehicles for our customers.”

The eight winners are: Toyota Avalon, Corolla, Highlander, Sienna and Venza; Lexus RX, and Scion tC and xB.  Only two automakers had more winners: Hyundai/Kia and Volkswagen/Audi each had nine.  Sienna was the only minivan to make the list.

Top Safety Pick awards recognize vehicles that do the best job of protecting people in front, side, rollover and rear crashes based on good ratings in IIHS tests.  Winners also must have available electronic stability control, a crash avoidance feature that significantly reduces crash risk.

Driving Safely on Icy Roads

When preparing for round 2 of this wintery storm we cant put our lives on hold until it passes so here are a few tips for your commute!
  1. Decrease your speed and leave yourself plenty of room to stop. You should allow at least three times more space than usual between you and the car in front of you.
  2. Brake gently to avoid skidding. If your wheels start to lock up, ease off the brake.
  3. Turn on your lights to increase your visibility to other motorists.
  4. Keep your lights and windshield clean.
  5. Use low gears to keep traction, especially on hills.
  6. Don't use cruise control or overdrive on icy roads.
  7. Be especially careful on bridges, overpasses and infrequently traveled roads, which will freeze first. Even at temperatures above freezing, if the conditions are wet, you might encounter ice in shady areas or on exposed roadways like bridges.
  8. Don't pass snow plows and sanding trucks. The drivers have limited visibility, and you're likely to find the road in front of them worse than the road behind.
  9. Don't assume your vehicle can handle all conditions. Even four-wheel and front-wheel drive vehicles can encounter trouble on winter roads.
If your rear wheels skid...
  1. Take your foot off the accelerator.
  2. Steer in the direction you want the front wheels to go. If your rear wheels are sliding left, steer left. If they're sliding right, steer right.
  3. If your rear wheels start sliding the other way as you recover, ease the steering wheel toward that side. You might have to steer left and right a few times to get your vehicle completely under control.
  4. If you have standard brakes, pump them gently.
  5. If you have anti-lock brakes (ABS), do not pump the brakes. Apply steady pressure to the brakes. You will feel the brakes pulse — this is normal.
If your front wheels skid...
  1. Take your foot off the gas and shift to neutral, but don't try to steer immediately.
  2. As the wheels skid sideways, they will slow the vehicle and traction will return. As it does, steer in the direction you want to go. Then put the transmission in "drive" or release the clutch, and accelerate gently.
If you get stuck...
  1. Do not spin your wheels. This will only dig you in deeper.
  2. Turn your wheels from side to side a few times to push snow out of the way.
  3. Use a light touch on the gas, to ease your car out.
  4. Use a shovel to clear snow away from the wheels and the underside of the car.
  5. Pour sand, kitty litter, gravel or salt in the path of the wheels, to help get traction.
  6. Try rocking the vehicle. (Check your owner's manual first — it can damage the transmission on some vehicles.) Shift from forward to reverse, and back again. Each time you're in gear, give a light touch on the gas until the vehicle gets going.
Please drive safely and enjoy this beautiful snow and have a happy holiday season!

2011 Toyota Corolla Debuts at LA Auto Show

2011 Toyota Corolla 016
Upholds 40+ Year Tradition for Value with New Styling Changes, Features

• Exterior Front, Rear Freshened
• Standard Vehicle Stability Control and Traction Control
• Standard Star Safety System and Smart Stop Technology
• Toyota Care Complimentary Maintenance Plan

Performance and Efficiency
The 2011 Corolla is available in three grades: the base-model Corolla, LE, and S. All models are equipped with the 1.8-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine, which produces 132 hp at 6,000 rpm and 128 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 rpm.  Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) controls valve timing on both the intake and exhaust camshafts to help optimize performance and fuel economy.  Internal components are optimized to reduce friction.

The 1.8-liter engine is paired with a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic Electronically Controlled Transmission (ECT) on the base Corolla, while the LE model features the four-speed automatic standard.  The four-speed automatic uses a torque converter with flex lockup for increased fuel efficiency, as well as uphill/downhill shift control.  For a more engaging driving experience, the driver can shift the four-speed automatic manually by moving the shift lever to the left from its “D” position into the “S” position, then pushing forward for upshifts and back for downshifts.  An indicator inside the combination gauge shows the gear selected. The 1.8-liter engine on the Corolla S transmits power through the five-speed manual transmission or the four-speed automatic.

The 1.8-liter engine has earned an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 28 mpg city and 35 mpg highway with the five-speed manual transmission, and 26 mpg city and 34 mpg highway with the four-speed automatic transmission.
Comfort and ConvenienceThe 2011 Corolla upholds a 40-plus year heritage for providing outstanding value in standard equipment.  All models feature a standard all-weather package.  The Corolla grade features new 15-inch steel wheels with full wheel covers; P195/65 R15 tires; a color-keyed front grille and exterior door handles; a heavy-duty rear window defogger with timer; AM/FM/CD audio with four speakers with MP3/WMA playback capability, auxiliary audio jack, and auto sound leveling; air conditioning with pollen filter;  intermittent windshield wipers; daytime running lights; black folding power mirrors that are larger for improved rear visibility; tilt and telescopic steering wheel; multi-information display with outside temperature, instant fuel economy, average fuel economy, average speed and travel distance; fabric-trimmed six-way adjustable drivers seat; four-way adjustable front passenger seat; 60/40 split folding rear seats and a 12-volt auxiliary power outlet.
